At all great universities the arts and humanities are essential, but only
at UC San Diego do we benefit from unique "inspired intersections" - engaging the creativity and imagination of scholars and artists with scientists, engineers, social scientists, and other thinkers focused on discovery and application.

Our artists and humanists are, by the passionate pursuit of traditional scholarly agendas as well as by use of dramatic advances in science and technology, reshaping their fields and moving them in exciting directions. In UC San Diego's Arts and Humanities, there is collaboration across departmental lines and across the campus in vital, novel, and altogether extraordinary endeavors.

Our philosophers use breakthroughs in brain-mapping to reassess questions about consciousness, freedom, and responsibility. Our literary critics, cultural studies specialists, and historians create new knowledge and understandings of how we fashion conceptions of ourselves and others, from around the world and across the centuries. And our artists, using advanced applications in computational technology, explore new frontiers in music, visual media, theatrical performance, and dance.
